He became interested in asian martial arts when
he was 7 years old. Then he discovered japanese school of fighting in neighbouring
town and started to train aikido. In 1971 he traveled to japan where he`s possessed
knowledge and gained a title of a master of fighting.
Four years later he got married and continued
his living in japan as a leaseholder of his father-in-law dojo. To the world
of aikido he was known as shigenichi (that was his father-in-law name). He`s
become first non-asian man who ran his own dojo. It still exists with over 2000
students to this very day.
In 1982 he`s returned to states and ran his
own school in los angeles.
The breakthrough moment came with meeting michael
orvitz - the chef of famous acting creative artists agency, who`d become his
student. Orvitz fascinated with his master soon realized that segal was born
to be action movies hero.
Steven segal made his debut in 1987 starring
in andy davis`s thriller "Above the law" as chicago police officer.
Hardly ever unknown actor gets a leading role in such blockbuster movie being
co worker and co producer of that film at the same time. After this smashing
debut segal was quickly becoming one of the most expensive hoolywood stars.
Every appearance had only strenghten him in his position. As a result of segal
success other blockbuster movies were made.
The thing that makes segal different from other
martial arts experts is in the way of filming his fight scenes. Originally in
his films he was using only aikido techniques. But with time and under the influence
of his co-workers he began to change it and tried to addopt it to the market
requirements.
Now his fights are extremly short cause in real
combat victory is decided in seconds. There are no acrobatic moves, no spectacular
jump kicks or flying in the air. The first one who can deal a quick and accurated
heavy blow wins.
